Men's jewelry gifts fail for one reason: they are bought for the giver's taste rather than the wearer's. A ring he will actually keep on is simple, comfortable and sized right. Here is how to choose one, and how to get the size without asking.

Order-by dates for Christmas

Every ring is made to order, 3 to 4 business days to make and 4 to 5 business days to deliver in the US (5 to 9 internationally). Order by Thursday, 10 December in the US, or Friday, 4 December for international delivery. Shipping is free and insured.

Three kinds of gift

A signet ring. The most giftable men's ring, because it is not a wedding band and does not pretend to be. Ours set a radiant cut lab-grown diamond flush in a bezel on a 4.5mm band: 14K gold at $2,410, platinum at $3,520. Engrave initials inside for free.

A diamond band. For a man who already wears a wedding band, a second band with a single flush-set stone, a row of pave or a baguette makes a quiet upgrade. A solitaire band in 14K gold starts at $1,500; a diagonal pave band is $1,430.

A plain band. For a husband who has never worn jewelry, a 2 to 4mm classic dome band is the one he will not notice until he misses it. From $1,010 in platinum (2mm) and $995 in 14K white gold (3mm). Our men's band guide explains widths and profiles.

Getting his size without asking

Borrow a ring he already wears on the same finger and measure the inside diameter with a ruler, or trace the inside on paper. 20mm inside is about a US size 10, 21mm about 11.5, 22mm about 12.75. If he wears nothing, order the size you think and lean larger: a slightly loose ring can be sized down. Resizing is complimentary within 30 days of delivery, so a wrong guess costs nothing but a week.

Which metal

Platinum is heavier, naturally white and never needs plating, which is why it suits a man who is hard on his hands. 14K gold is lighter and comes in yellow, white and rose. Yellow gold is the current choice for signet rings. See 14K vs 18K vs platinum.

Engraving and returns

Engraving inside the band is free, chosen at checkout or requested within 24 hours. Standard pieces can be returned within 30 days of delivery with the prepaid label we send; engraved pieces carry a 10 percent restocking fee.
